Almost a year ago Alessia Pifferi, the 38-year-old in cell since July 2022 for having let her daughter Diana die of starvation , asked from prison to have a telephone conversation with Giulio Caria, the bricklayer from Berchidda detained in Sassari ( 30-year sentence, final in 2017 ) for killing his ex-partner Silvia Caramazza ten years ago, whose body was found in a freezer.
This is what emerged in the midst of Pifferi's trial, which is being held in Milan. And, from what we learn, the contact request (which was rejected) came from the woman after Caria sent her a letter, boasting of being a relative of hers and wanting to cultivate an emotional bond.
Truly singular motivations and circumstances, which act as a link between two shocking crimes, which caused an extreme sensation among public opinion.
As regards the proceedings in which Pifferi is accused, the Prosecutor's Office underlined that the woman never had mental problems, but "a wicked attitude" and that she was "aware" of what would have happened to the little girl.
For the defense, for her consultants and for the psychological team of the San Vittore prison, however, she would have mental retardation, an IQ of a "7-year-old girl".
In doubt, the Court of Assizes of Milan, at the request of the defender Alessia Pontenani, deemed it "necessary" to order a psychiatric assessment to "ascertain the existence or otherwise at the time of the crime of the capacity of understanding and will and the possible social danger" of the woman, who must answer for voluntary homicide, even aggravated by premeditation.
