"We believe that Lavitola warned Ranucci about the risk of attacks before the events of October 16th . In fact, there was a meeting on September 7th during which Lavitola likely warned Ranucci of the dangers he faced due to possible attacks. This was therefore a month and a half before the attack itself ."

Lawyer Arturto Cola said this before entering Rebibbia prison for a meeting with Valter Lavitola, the instigator of the attack on the journalist : "We are interested in the facts: during the preliminary hearing, my client denied that there was a prior agreement on the attack," he added.

"The only real order was that no one should be harmed. This is a very important point that emerges from the documents at a time when there was no suspicion, on July 2nd, when one of the perpetrators spontaneously declared that no one intended to harm anyone," the lawyer added. "The motive certainly raises a question of relevance to public opinion, but from a criminal perspective, it's a question that, in our opinion, has little bearing: whether he did it for Ranucci's good, for political reasons, or to protect him, makes little difference."

The lawyer met with the fixer to "verify whether it is necessary to integrate the confession of August 12 in view of the preliminary hearing which will presumably be held next week" .

"It's not a matter," he clarified, "of retracting or saying different things, but simply of clarifying and offering an authentic interpretation of what has already been reported. We can do this because spontaneous statements can be made at the Review Court."
