Inter Milan's second goalkeeper, Josep Martinez, was behind the wheel of the car that struck and killed an 81-year-old man in Fenegrò, in the province of Como, around 9:30 this morning. The man was in a four-wheeled electric wheelchair on provincial road 32 .
According to some witnesses, the elderly man swerved and crossed into the oncoming lane as Martinez's car was approaching. The Nerazzurri goalkeeper is currently undergoing tests because he is still in a state of shock.
As a sign of mourning, Inter Milan cancelled coach Cristian Chivu's press conference on the eve of their match against Fiorentina.
A 27-year-old Spaniard, Martinez has been playing for Inter since last season, having signed him from Genoa. Yann Sommer's backup, he made his debut for the Nerazzurri on December 19th in the Coppa Italia round of 16 match against Udinese, a 2-0 win. On February 22, 2025, he made his league debut in a 1-0 home win against his former team, Genoa, contributing to Inter's victory with a solid performance. He finished third with Spain at the 2021 European Under-21 Championship.
