Ilaria Salis, Nordio against the family: «He lost a year». The father: «He is not informed»
The back and forth a few hours after the announcement of the 39-year-old's lawyers' request for house arrest in BudapestIlaria Salis's family "unfortunately they lost a year".
Justice Minister Carlo Nordio criticizes the family of the teacher of Sardinian origins who has been in prison for over a year in Budapest on charges of having attacked neo-Nazi militants: «If they had immediately asked for house arrest in Hungary, perhaps all this would not have happened it would have happened. It is a great result that they are convinced, now let's think step by step. It would be a great achievement if the Hungarian judge granted them. We then hope to be able to operate on the agreements, our agreements provide that once prison detention has ceased then the international agreement rule can be triggered according to which it is possible to request that house arrest be served in Italy".
Ilaria's father responds promptly : «Minister Nordio is not informed of the facts – he replies to Repubblica – I prefer to have a different attitude from the minister, I ask him to check the facts carefully and to check certain declarations, which regarding my wife were very devastating. I expect an attitude from the institutions that is consistent with their work. If we start arguing with the family...".
The back and forth is not random and takes place a few hours after the announcement by the 39-year-old's lawyers regarding the request for a precautionary measure of house arrest in Budapest, which will be made by the end of the month. And ten days after the last meeting that Ilaria's father had with the ministers Tajani and Nordio, following which he bitterly reported that the government would not support the requests for the woman's house arrest in Italy or in the embassy, recording the government's inability to intervene in the choices of Hungarian judges. Also on that occasion the Keeper of the Seals explained to Roberto Salis that asking the Hungarian judge for house arrest in Italy was "a legally wrong step, because the law does not allow it".
The next important stage could therefore arrive as early as the end of the month, when - Ilaria's lawyers report - the procedures necessary to request house arrest in Budapest will be completed, including the payment of a bail of 20 million Hungarian forints, equivalent to over 51 thousand euros, and the finding of a "safe and monitored home" in the Hungarian capital. The fact that the family members of the Milanese teacher "were convinced" to ask for house arrest in Hungary "is a great result", comments Nordio. An "obligatory" step, as the Keeper of the Seals has been repeating for weeks.
If the new measure is obtained in Budapest, the next step would in fact be to enforce the framework decision of the European Council, which provides for Ilaria's return to her homeland, where she would then serve the same precautionary measure. In the last few hours the 39-year-old, as reported by Foreign Minister Tajani, has «confirmed a clear improvement in prison conditions» while the court has brought forward the hearing to next March 28 : «It is a very positive development which indicates the will of the judiciary to speed up the process as requested by the Italian government", explains the number one of the Farnesina, commenting positively on the results obtained. One point, that of bringing forward the hearing initially scheduled for May, which several members of the majority also insist on. «It is a success for the Meloni government», underlines the Fdi group leader in the Chamber Tommaso Foti. Roberto Salis also clearly says that Ilaria's conditions are improving : «My daughter's situation has started to improve since she saw herself in chains. Today we expected something more but we understand that we have to wait."
