Unknown 3 does not exist. The unknown genetic profile found on a gauze pad used 18 years ago by the coroner to collect biological material from Chiara Poggi's mouth is the result of contamination from previous autopsies .

According to the Pavia Public Prosecutor's Office, it would coincide with that of a body subjected to an autopsy shortly before the girl's murder .

One sample, in fact, "showed a concordance of the alleles in relation to the subject identified by the anonymous code 153E," namely Unknown 3. The checks were ordered "in order to avoid any investigations into third parties" and to "allow the expert investigations, entrusted to forensic geneticist Denise Albani, whose work has received unanimous recognition from all parties involved for the seriousness and methodology adopted, to be focused on the material found," explain the prosecutors, who have ordered further investigations.

However, there is another development, 18 years after Chiara's murder: "To ensure a more comprehensive evaluation of the evidence gathered, both at the forensic examination of the victim and at the crime scene, the Prosecutor's Office has appointed Professor Cristina Cattaneo, full professor at the Department of Biomedical Sciences for Health at the University of Milan, a leading figure in the fields of anthropology and forensic medicine, as an additional consultant to the Public Prosecutor ."

Alberto Stasi's lawyers, Giada Bocellari and Antonio De Rensis , are particularly satisfied with the outcome of the investigations, which ruled out the presence of an Unknown Person 3. They include the discovery of DNA contamination on the gauze among the "very serious facts" that "fundamentally compromise the assessments made in the trial against Stasi ." These "very serious facts," they now openly say, are "in themselves sufficient to warrant a review of his conviction ."

"The diligent investigations carried out by the Pavia Public Prosecutor's Office highlight a very serious fact which, regardless of any further action that may be considered, demonstrates, once again, the total unreliability of the investigations carried out in 2007 , which adds to all the other errors committed and which have emerged in recent months," the lawyers state.
