Denise Albani, the expert appointed by Pavia investigating judge Daniela Garlaschelli to conduct the unique investigation into Chiara Poggi's murder, has ruled out the possibility that the "Unknown 3" profile isolated on a gauze pad used at the time of the crime to collect biological material from the girl's mouth was contaminated by those who handled the specimen in recent weeks.
The judge's geneticist reportedly compared that male DNA with that of those who entered the laboratory to assist in the analysis: Albani's collaborators, Luciano Garofano, defense consultant for Andrea Sempio, under investigation in the new investigation by Pavia prosecutors, and Marzio Capra, an expert on the Poggi family.
All of them were swabbed for potential contamination. This was not the case for the other consultants, such as those representing Alberto Stasi's lawyers, who remained behind a glass window to observe the genetic testing. Now, the expert's next step, upon returning from vacation, scheduled months ago and at a time when no one suspects, will be to compare the results with the profiles of, for example, those who took the photos in the autopsy room or any other assistants to medical examiner Marco Ballardini. The expert has already identified the DNA of the nurse who prepared the body on that gauze, which was not sterile and could have been "contaminated" even accidentally.
However, there is no official information on how the Pavia Prosecutor's Office, together with the Carabinieri of the Milan Investigative Unit, is proceeding with the DNA collection and possible comparison, in the belief that the trace of Unknown Person 3 is that of an accomplice of the murderer, who, according to the prosecution's hypothesis, is Sempio.
