A woman, Daniela Zinnanti, who turned 50 in July, was stabbed to death dozens of times last night in her home on Via Lombardia, in the Lombardo district of Messina.

The police arrested a man, Santino Bonfiglio, 67, the victim's ex-partner, who confessed under questioning and was taken to prison.

The man was under house arrest for crimes against the person but – contrary to what initially emerged – he was not wearing an electronic bracelet, investigators have clarified.

According to initial investigations, Bonfiglio allegedly went to see his ex-girlfriend to talk, perhaps to persuade her to get back together, but was rebuffed. The suspect then allegedly grabbed the knife and stabbed her dozens of times.

The murder was discovered by the victim's daughter who felt ill upon seeing the body and was taken to the hospital.
