Senio, Lamone, and Montone: the streams that have repeatedly overflowed in recent years, causing widespread damage in the Ravenna plain, are once again causing fear on Christmas Day. This afternoon, evacuations were initiated in Castel Bolognese, Cotignola, Bagnacavallo, and other areas that are now accustomed to dealing with the effects of the climate crisis .
Civil Protection, already mobilized at the highest level given the red alert day, has opened centers to accommodate people forced to leave their homes: many municipalities have ordered complete evacuations for those living within 300 meters of the streams , while they have asked those living less than a kilometer away to move to higher floors.
Some rivers have already exceeded the maximum alert threshold, but no flooding has been reported so far. However, it is not excluded that in some situations, breaches in the banks will be made for controlled flooding in open countryside to help the water flow. The peak flood is expected late this evening . The weather may provide some relief: after heavy rains in the last few hours, precipitation has eased, prompting the Civil Protection Department to downgrade the alert from red to orange for tomorrow. However, it has rained more than expected, especially in the hills. Therefore, the peak floods will be more severe than initially expected. It has, however, been a Christmas of anxiety and concern for many families who periodically have to deal with river floods .
