Excrement, cockroaches and mice in hospital canteens: seven kitchens closed
Rodents, cockroaches and manure in the rooms where food was prepared for patients: checks by Nas throughout ItalyOut of almost a thousand hospital canteens, 340 were irregular.
The Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Health, in agreement with the Ministry of Health, has carried out checks at national level within both public and private health facilities to verify their hygienic conditions.
The investigations involved 992 cooking and meal preparation points: 340 of these highlighted irregularities, equal to 34%, with the ascertainment of 431 criminal and administrative infractions, for a total of 230 thousand euros in fines, contested due to violations in the management of food and in the use of environments lacking adequate cleanliness and functionality.
A total of seven kitchens were closed due to "the widespread presence of humidity, the formation of mold and the infestation of insects and rodent excrement ". Among the most striking cases, the Nucleus of Milan closed the canteens of a geriatric institute and a hospital as they were invaded by insects and cockroaches in the food preparation/dishwashing rooms, in the warehouse and in the cold rooms. Same thing in Naples while in Ragusa the Nas suspended the activity of the kitchen premises of a hospital where the presence of rodents and their droppings was ascertained.
More than 400 kg of food without traceability, expired and stored in inadequate environments were also seized .
Nine managers of the canteen services reported on charges of fraud and non-compliance in public supplies, possession of food in a poor state of conservation and non-compliance with workplace safety legislation.
