An 89-year-old man threw 21,000 euros, his life savings, out of the window at a man waiting for them outside his house .

It's happening in the Belluno area, and it's a classic fake policeman scam. It all started with a phone call from a woman pretending to be the elderly man's daughter. In tears, she told him she had caused a car accident involving a victim. "I risk immediate arrest if you don't pay," she told him.

Shortly thereafter, a man appeared outside the 89-year-old's house, pretending to be a plainclothes police officer: the old man collected 21,000 euros in a plastic bag and threw them out of the window .

Luckily, the real Carabinieri were there, and not by chance. The officers had been tailing the scammer for hours , tracking what they considered suspicious movements of the car, which had foreign license plates. Thus, while the man, a thirty-year-old foreigner with no criminal record, hid the bag under his jacket, the Carabinieri stopped him and arrested him red-handed. In the car, they found another €1,200 in cash, gold jewelry (most likely obtained through other similar scams), and five phones with different SIM cards .
