The second degree trial for the death of Desirée Mariottini has ended. The Court of Assizes of Appeal in Rome confirmed the convictions of the four defendants, Alinno Chima, Mamadou Gara, Yussef Salia and Brian Minthe accused, for various reasons, of murder, sexual assault and drug dealing. Gara and Salia were sentenced to life in prison , Chima to 27 years and Minthe to 24 and a half .

The girl, originally from Cisterna di Latina, died on 19 October 2018, at the hands of the four convicts, after being drugged and raped. His body was found lifeless in an abandoned building in the San Lorenzo district in Rome.

According to the investigation, the defendants had given the girl, who was suffering from withdrawal, a powerful mix of substances , assuring her that it was methadone. However, the mixture contained psychotropics which resulted in the loss "of its ability to react" allowing the suspects to be able to carry out the rape.

“I was hoping for confirmation of the convictions. They are four monsters and they must be behind bars. This sentence gives me just a little bit of peace after so much pain, but the pain will always be there and no one will ever give me my daughter back», says Barbara, Desiree Mariottini's mother. The woman's words come after the sentence of the appeal judges who confirmed the sentences against the four defendants.
