Covid, reinfections are on the rise: unvaccinated women and health professionals are more at risk
Iss, Brusaferro: "We're playing a game, we're ahead but it's not the ninetieth"Covid-19 reinfections are still rising in Italy.
From 24 August 2021 to 5 June 2022 , 532,755 cases of reinfection were reported , equal to 4% of the total cases notified, and in the last week the percentage of reinfections out of the total reported cases increased to 7.4% , an increase compared to the previous week when it was at 6.3%.
It can be read in the weekly extended report that integrates the Covid Iss-Ministry of Health monitoring. The unvaccinated, women, health professionals and those who have been immunized for more than 120 days are more at risk ( here the latest bulletin in Sardinia, here the latest national bulletin).
"The greater risk in female subjects may probably be due to the greater presence of women in the school environment where an intense screening activity is carried out and to the fact that women perform the role of caregiver in the family more often ", reads in the Report. The younger age groups (from 12 to 49 years) are also more exposed than people with the first diagnosis between the ages of 50-59 years.
The effectiveness of the anti-Covid vaccine in preventing cases of severe disease remains high : it is 69% in those vaccinated with a full course of less than 90 days, 68% with a full course of 91 and 120 days, and 71% in those who have completed the vaccination cycle for over 120 days, to reach 87% in vaccinated with boosters.
"We are playing a game, we are ahead but it is not the ninetieth. We must not let our guard down", sums up ISS president Silvio Brusaferro , explaining that "in the face of many infected or reinfected, the hospital impact and death cases are limited. In short, we live with the virus, thanks to the immune coverage; the vaccination campaign has registered a participation of 90 per cent, it is an act of trust on the part of citizens, and for this reason they are also watching us from abroad. of people "did not get vaccinated.
Regarding a possible fourth dose , Brusaferro said that the situation will be "evaluated as soon as we have the data . Italy together with the United States, France, Germany is among the most advanced countries in collecting data. There are ongoing trials - he added - We need to protect the most fragile, they are those who pay the highest price ".
