The island of Elba is burning, at the mercy of a huge fire that broke out yesterday in a wooded area between the municipality of Rio Marina (Livorno) and Porto Azzurro, in the locality of San Felo. There are about 700 people who - threatened by the flames - evacuated from homes, a campsite and a holiday village.

However, the Region reported that the fire is being contained : dozens of teams on the ground are operating on the island, two regional helicopters and two Canadairs. In total, 14 hectares have been burned so far. Of the evacuees, 150 were housed in municipal structures, the rest found accommodation on their own. At the moment, the return of the evacuees to their respective lodgings is expected in the evening.

No injuries are reported. The fire last night, fueled by the strong wind, was contained thanks to the work of the firefighting teams and firefighters who speak of "the situation under control, with the last outbreaks being extinguished".
