The man who was killed this morning in front of the Verona Porta Nuova station allegedly lunged at a group of officers, armed with a knife. The man, a foreign national, was hit by bullets fired by one of the police officers. According to an initial reconstruction, the victim initially attacked the local police officers who intervened to investigate a car accident.

He then headed towards the train station where, perhaps under the influence of drugs or alcohol, he kicked the ticket office, some parked cars and the window of a tobacconist. Two hours later, around 7 this morning, he returned to the station where a State Police patrol tried to stop him to identify him. He reacted violently and attacked the police officers brandishing a knife. One of the officers fired several shots to intimidate him but one of the bullets hit the man, killing him.

On what happened in front of the station, the deputy prime minister and leader of the League Matteo Salvini commented: "With all due respect - he wrote on social media -, we will not miss him. Thanks to the police for doing their duty".
