At birth Giulio and Guido, twins. On their eighteenth birthday they became Giulia and Gaia.

And today at 23 they will change sex on the same day, in two consecutive operating sessions at the Florentine hospital in Careggi.

It is the first case in Italy of two transgender twins who change sex after the first in the world made known last February in Brazil, when the 19-year-olds Mayla Phoebe Rezende and Sofia Albuquerck Fereira completed the process with the surgery, performed one at a distance of a few days on the other.

A complicated surgery, it is explained, because patients suffer from a form of coagulopathy that exposes them to a greater risk of bleeding.

They will be operated on by the team led by Marco Carini, which includes the surgeon Andrea Cocci, to whom the two told: "We were born in male bodies but we have both always felt female, since we have memories".

"It is a day to celebrate - said Giulia and Gaia during the preoperative interviews -. We made a very free choice, our family supported us in our project, then being twins we always helped and strengthened each other"

"They have always felt like women, but they started their journey, as the law provides, from the age of eighteen - explained Cocci -: first with hormonal therapy and after having been authorized by the judge, they were placed on the operating list".
