Two more gold medals at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham come from the Italian race walking team , in a morning full of satisfactions.
Massimo Stano won the marathon walk (42.2 km), beating out Spaniard Miguel Angel Lopez and Frenchman Quinion. Riccardo Orsoni finished fifth.
Stano finished with a time of 2.56.49, a new European record and world best time of the season, as well as the second-best world performance ever.
In the women's race, Sofia Fiorini dominated completely, shattering the world record with a time of 3.15.11, leaving a gap behind her and lapping almost all of her opponents, with the exception of the second-place finisher.
These medals add to the two silvers and a bronze won this morning in the half marathon walk, bringing Italy to the top of the medal table: they now have seven golds, four silvers, and four bronzes, bringing their total to 15. Great Britain, in second place, has four golds, five silvers, and one bronze .
