The National Health Service is shrinking, while private healthcare is filling the vacant spaces, to the point that it now represents the backbone of entire sectors such as rehabilitation. At the same time , citizens' healthcare costs are rising, along with the share of those who forgo treatment.

This is the portrait of the creeping privatization of healthcare created by the Gimbe Foundation .

In 2023, in Sardinia - according to the latest available data from the State General Accounting Office - the share of public spending allocated to private contracted services was 13.2% (national average 20.3%).

Between 2016 and 2023 – the Gimbe report highlights – Italian household spending on private healthcare facilities increased by 137%, from 3.05 billion to 7.23 billion euros.
