The race for the 2026 Oscars has only just begun, but it's already shaping up to be a duel between A Battle After Another and Hamnet after the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills, broadcast live on CBS: PT Anderson's film, which reached the final with nine nominations, took home four awards, including Best Picture in the comedy/musical category. But Hamnet, the moving story of William Shakespeare's wife Agnes, has threatened its path, prevailing in the Best Dramatic Film category.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as an aging revolutionary forced to return to militancy to save his daughter from a powerful and corrupt enemy, A Battle After Another also left the gala with awards for its director and screenwriter and for Teyana Taylor, for Best Supporting Actress. Ryan Coogler's Sinners won two awards, including one for box office: in television, the British series Adolescence took home four Globes, while Jean Smart from Hacks and Noah Wyle from The Pitts (also named Best Drama) each picked up one statuette.

Academy members begin voting for the Oscars today: nominations will be announced on January 22.

Sinners, which grossed $278 million in the U.S. alone and ran in theaters from Easter to July, was the pre-event favorite in the Best Drama category, but the international composition of the Globes jury may have influenced the chances of Zhao's film and also led to the award for Best Actor in a Drama for Wagner Moura, the star of The Secret Agent: the first Brazilian to win in that category, Moura followed in the footsteps of Fernanda Torres, who won Best Actress last year.

The Secret Agent also won Best International Feature Film, beating out favorites like Sentimental Value and A Simple Incident by Iranian dissident Jafar Panahi. Other actors in addition to Moura, who was already nominated for Narcos in 2016, won their first Golden Globes: Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, and Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I'd Kick You.

Chalamet had already been nominated four times: "I'd be lying if I didn't say those memories make this moment sweeter," he said on stage. For the second year in a row, CBS had entrusted Nikki Glaser with the live broadcast: in addition to the usual actors (Sean Penn was compared to "a sexy leather bag," DiCaprio was mocked for his very young girlfriends) , her monologue was also impacted by the battle between Netflix and Paramount over the takeover of Warner Bros., the Department of Justice for censorship in the Epstein case ("The Golden Globe for Best Editing"), and even CBS: "The new place to watch trash news."
