Csm, 9 out of 10 candidates elected, but there is the "Valentino case"
Parliament reconvenes on the 24th to elect a single layman
Of the 10 lay candidates to be sent to the CSM, the Parliament convened in joint session elects only 9. The name indicated by the Brothers of Italy at the last moment, that is, halfway through the election, that of Felice Giuffrè does not obtain the necessary numbers .
The others who make it are: Isabella Bertolini (521 votes), Daniela Bianchini and Rosanna Natoli (with 519 votes) in the FdI share; Roberto Romboli for the Pd, which is the most voted with 531 preferences. While the one who gets the least is Ernesto Carbone , indicated by Action-Iv, with 399 votes. In fact, the agreement with the M5S does not hold up on his name. But Claudia Eccher (519), Fabio Pinelli (516) for the League and Michele Papa (506) indicated by the 5 Stars also pass.
The Chambers, therefore, will have to meet again to elect a single lay member. And the session is convened for Tuesday 24 January at 4 pm.
CHAOS IN THE MAJORITY – The election of 10 laymen causes chaos to explode in the majority. And the controversy is triggered by the candidacy of Giuseppe Valentino , a Calabrian criminal lawyer who was already undersecretary of Justice. Fratelli d'Italia indicated him for days as the name on which to bet for the vice-presidency of the self-governing body of the magistrates, without anyone having anything to say. But it is when the parliamentarians begin to vote in the Deputies Hall, equipped for the occasion, that we remember how Valentino is being investigated in a trial of the 'Ndrangheta , known as "Gotha", brought up by a collaborator of justice in 2021. The news, published on some sites during the call and underlined by the exponents of the 5 Stars who announce their intention not to vote for him , seems to derail the agreement reached with difficulty after days of intense negotiation within the majority and between the majority and opposition. And in the aftermath of the arrest of the boss Matteo Messina Denaro with the premier Giorgia Meloni flew to Palermo to say that against organized crime there will be a merciless fight, " Brothers of Italy this concession really cannot afford it ", it is observed from many quarters in the centre-right. And then the vote is stopped. FdI MPs are asked not to answer the first call even if for some it is too late. In the majority, many have already expressed themselves, but it is still hoped to be able to remedy. So once again it is a question of all the protagonists, this time in Transatlantico, and in the end another invitation appears on the cell phones of senators and deputies of the centre-right: vote for Felice Giuffrè, full professor of Public Law Institutions in Catania, instead of Valentino . But by now it's chaos and some Azzurri MPs observe that this "would never have happened with Niccolò", underlining how in the past legislatures the game of choices for the CSM was always played by Niccolò Ghedini with "excellent results".
While the decision is made and all the groups are persuaded to vote for the new name, no one is going under the catafalques anymore and the voting is effectively suspended for over an hour. But then comes the news of Valentino's renunciation of running as a candidate and everything resumes. He defends himself from any suspicion and speaks of the "mud" that has been thrown at him, while the leaders of the Brothers of Italy send notes in support of their party colleague, former senator, as well as president of the National Alliance Foundation since 2017.
And while the parliamentarians return to the Chamber to express their preferences, they do the math: on Giuffrè it is not easy to reach the required quorum given that almost all the senators and many deputies had already voted for Valentino. On the other 9 candidates, on the other hand, the agreement seems to hold up given that it was also possible to respect the dictates of the latest reform of the CSM to provide for respect for gender balance.
And in the end it is Fratelli d'Italia who fielded more women who, in addition to the male candidacy, indicate as many as three: Isabella Bertolini, Daniela Bianchini and Rosanna Natoli. One is also held by the League which, in addition to the lawyer Fabio Pinelli, is betting everything on the lawyer from Trento Claudia Eccher.
