The Zooprophylactic Institute of Sardinia (Izs) will have the task, for the whole of 2022, to purchase the vaccines for the prophylaxis of Blue tongue (blue tongue) and to guarantee their distribution to the veterinary services of the Sardinian local health authorities.

This is foreseen by a resolution approved by the regional council, on the proposal of the councilor for health Mario Nieddu. Before the measure, the Region had already purchased 600,000 doses.

The massive use of vaccines has become inevitable given that, last August, the island was the scene of a new epidemic wave with a high number of outbreaks. Hence the choice to carry out a compulsory vaccination program against "Blue tongue" for the year 2022 extended to all sheep heads of farms classified as at greatest risk and to replacement heads of all remaining farms with sheep farms present on the regional territory .

The Zooprophylactic Institute was also entrusted with the purchase, based on actual needs and on funds already allocated, of tuberculin, an essential active ingredient for diagnosing both bovine tuberculosis (Mtbc) and avian tuberculosis (Ppd), a contagious infectious disease with socio-economic and public health effects of considerable importance.

The control activities will be carried out throughout the current year and on the entire regional territory.

"The goal - comments the regional coordinator of the Lega, Dario Giagoni - is to immunize the entire heritage present in the region from Blue tongue, starting from the areas at greatest risk". Furthermore, "we would like to underline that the teamwork and simplification conducted by the veterinary service of the department and by Izs himself is the trump card for providing answers to a fundamental sector for the entire economy of the island".
