Italy's Pietro Riva won another medal, taking silver in the marathon at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Gold went to Germany's Amanal Petros, and bronze to Israel's Gashau Ayale. Ahmed Ouhda, the other Italian, finished eighteenth.
"I feel good on the road. There's a mental component to it. I was confident in my abilities," Riva commented. "From the 40th kilometer," the Italian added, "I felt good, I relaxed, and I waited for the sprint. I'm happy to have won silver. I also thank Meucci, who has always been my idol ."

The Italian women also took silver in the team classification . With the arrival of Giovanna Epis, twenty-first in the women's marathon, a medal is assured for Italy in the team classification (which considers the sum of all participants' times by nationality). Gold goes to Great Britain.
