Avis will vote against the expansion of the RWM, opening yet another crack in the increasingly shaky coalition governing the Region. And it calls on President Todde and the entire center-left to "open a phase of discussion."
"We are against the resolution that would authorize the expansion of the arms factory of the German company RWM, part of the Rheinmetall Group, and will consequently vote against it when it is brought before the council. The German company Rheinmetall supplies Israel with 120 mm precision ammunition for tanks, which, according to Der Spiegel, are widely used in the ground attack on Gaza ," reads a statement from group leader Maria Laura Orrù , Public Works Councilor Antonio Piu , and regional councilors Diego Loi and Giuseppe Dessena .
The company, Germany's largest arms manufacturer, saw total revenues increase 35% in 2024, reaching $11.4 billion. Sales of weapons and ammunition increased 58%, reaching $3.26 billion, according to its financial reports. Sardinia already bears a disproportionate military burden, and adding an arms industry condemns it to being the backwater of a war economy , reviving the old blackmail of jobs in exchange for invasive activities that consume land, divide communities, and leave no future, only empty warehouses and young people forced to leave. Instead, we demand development based on the island's resources, on peace, on the quality of the environment, and on the dignity of work, not on yet another arms factory.
