Ugandan Marathon Runner Rebecca Cheptegei Dies After Being Burned by Her Boyfriend

After days of agony, Rebecca Cheptegei, the Ugandan marathon runner, died from severe burns after her boyfriend set her on fire last Sunday.

The president of the Ugandan Olympic Committee announced it.

“We have learned of the sad passing of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei following a violent attack by her boyfriend . May her soul rest in peace and we strongly condemn violence against women,” Donald Rukare said on X, deploring “a vile and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete.”

33-year-old Cheptegei was hospitalized in intensive care in Eldoret, Kenya.
