Today Israel commemorates the second anniversary of the October 7 attack on the Nova Festival in the Negev Desert and nearby kibbutzim by Palestinian Hamas militants, during which 1,250 people were killed and approximately 250 were kidnapped . These raids triggered the Jewish state's ferocious retaliation in the Gaza Strip and the bloody conflict—66,000 dead —that continues to this day.
To commemorate the massacre, families of the victims will visit the site of the attack and observe a minute of silence . Israelis will gather in various locations across the country to commemorate the day of the attack.
Commemorations are also planned in Italy and other European countries and beyond. In Rome, the ghetto and other Jewish cultural sites are under lockdown.
"We will never forget the horror of the Hamas attacks on October 7 and the pain they caused to the innocent victims, their families, and the entire Israeli people two years ago. We honor their memory by working tirelessly for peace," wrote European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on social media.
"Two years have passed," Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote, "since the ignominy of the massacre committed by Hamas terrorists against thousands of defenseless and innocent Israeli civilians, including women and children. Unspeakable crimes that make October 7th one of the darkest pages in history."
