Over 18,000 homes and shops were left without electricity in New Orleans due to a strong tornado that particularly hit the eastern part of the city where it caused serious damage and at least one victim, several injured.

"State agencies are assisting local officials as they assess the damage and impacts of these tornadoes," Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards tweeted.

The fire brigade and emergency services are in action, particularly in the Arabi district.
