Eleven people died in a plane crash in Tomblaine, in the eastern French department of Meurthe-et-Moselle, where a tourist plane crashed, the prefect announced.

According to reports, there was a group of flight enthusiasts on board who were heading to make their first parachute jump.

"The cause was a malfunction," said the prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle, Yves Séguy. The plane, belonging to a skydiving club, "fell vertically," he added, specifying that "there was no trajectory that could be attributed to an emergency landing." The plane crashed near residential areas , and "we are fortunate that there were no other victims," he concluded.
