After the violent protests linked to the increase in gas prices, the president of Kazakhstan dissolved the government. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, according to a decree, has accepted the resignation of the executive headed by Prime Minister Askar Mamin. Now Deputy Premier Alikhan Smailov will take up an interim prime ministerial post until the new government is formed.

Yesterday a state of emergency was declared valid from today to January 19 in the oil region of Mangystau and in Almaty, the economic capital. The curfew will be in effect from 11pm to 7am.

In one of the demonstrations in Almaty, the police dispersed the crowd with stun grenades and tear gas.

But the fury of the demonstrators does not subside. Just in Almaty, a group of demonstrators broke into the building that houses the office of the mayor of the city today.
