Japan and the European Union have signed a new security and defence partnership in Tokyo , which EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell hailed as "a historic and timely step".
Borrell and his Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya announced the pact, which will come into force in January and which, according to local media, includes more joint military exercises, high-level dialogue and defense cooperation.
"In Tokyo to chair the first EU-Japan strategic dialogue. In recent years, EU-Japan bilateral relations have become stronger than ever. Today, we will open a new chapter with the signature of the first EU Security and Defence Partnership in the Indo-Pacific", wrote EU High Representative Josep Borrell on X.
