Israel has recorded its first case of what has been called "flurona": a contemporary infection of flu and Covid. The name is a mix of the words "flu" (flu in English) and coronavirus.

The news was reported by the Ynet website, explaining that it is a woman in labor who tested positive for both infections at the Beilinson hospital in Petach Tikva.

According to the hospital, the young mother, who is not vaccinated against either virus, is feeling well and should be discharged from the hospital very soon.

The health ministry is looking into the case, which was very light, to determine whether the combination of the two infections can cause more serious illness.

"Last year - said Professor Arnon Vizhnitser, director of the gynecology department of the hospital - we have not seen cases of flu among pregnant women or women in childbirth. Today we are witnessing cases of both Covid and flu that are starting to raise the head. We see more and more pregnant women with the flu. "

According to Roberto Cauda, an infectious disease specialist at Gemelli in Rome, the case is a bit strange “because in medicine it has always been said that if there is a virus that causes one disease, it prevents the development of another due to a different virus. The explanation could lie in the fact that Covid causes a defect in the production of interferon and this would open the way to the other virus, which in this case is the flu ", he explains.
