Historic meeting in San Francisco between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
A brief handshake, ritual smiles and about four hours of private face-to-face time in a luxurious residence in the Californian city, surrounded by a large park, once the set of the television series "Dinasty".
“We can work together on artificial intelligence (limiting its use for military purposes, ed.) and on the climate,” the Washington leader said as he opened the summit.
For his part, Beijing's number one underlined that "turning away is not an option for the United States and China".
Relations between China and the United States have never been easy "over the last 50 years and more", Xi admitted, underlining however that despite the problems the two nations "have always managed to move forward".
«The world is big enough for the coexistence and success of China and the United States», continued Xi, highlighting how the bilateral relations between the two countries are the most important and it would be «unrealistic» for one of the parties to try to «reshape " the other one.
An agreement has also been announced with which Beijing will launch a crackdown on the production and export of the chemical precursors of Fentanyl, the low-cost synthetic opioid that claims tens of thousands of victims every year in the USA.
In exchange, Washington could lift sanctions against the forensic science institute, accused of collaborating in the repression of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.
