Two people were stabbed on the street in Ansbach, a town in German Bavaria, by a man shouting "Allah akbar".

The 30-year-old was then shot to death by the police who are now investigating a possible "Islamist or terrorist context". The attack took place last night near the station. The injured are not in danger of life.

Ansbach itself was the scene, in July 2016, of another worrying episode: the first claimed by Isis in Germany. Mohammed Delel , a 27-year-old Syrian refugee whose asylum application was rejected, attempted to detonate a homemade bomb at a concert with 2,500 spectators. But something had gone wrong: the Syrian, who had drug problems and suffered from mental illness, did not have a ticket to enter. The backpack with the bomb blew up at the entrance, killing him and injuring about 15 people.
