There are currently five victims, in a toll that also includes one missing, of a fire that occurred in a factory in the Japanese prefecture of Niigata, north-west of Tokyo, late yesterday.

The company, Sanko Seika, a manufacturer of rice-based crackers, had about 30 workers on the night shift at work when the flames suddenly broke out.

Among the dead there are 4 women between 60 and 70 years while the identification of the fifth person is awaited.

The firefighters, who intervened on the spot, took about 9 hours to tame the fire, the causes of which must be ascertained.
