The fire broke out around 2.30am on the seventh floor of a building in Moulins, a working-class neighbourhood. The massive rescue intervention was immediate, but did not prevent a massacre: "Unfortunately seven people died during the fire", reported the emergency services.
Among the victims were "three small children" aged 5, 7 and 10 . The other dead are a teenager, two women and a man . One victim lost his life by jumping out of the window to escape the flames. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin spoke of a "terrible tragedy". The fire would be "artisan", said the Nice public prosecutor.
The firefighters saved 35 people, writes Le Figaro. There are also three very serious injuries .
The municipality of Nice opened a crisis unit at the Nikaia room, near the site of the fire, to accommodate families evacuated from the building where the fire broke out. “They will be placed in other accommodation,” assured deputy mayor Anne Ramos.
The apartment where the fire started was inhabited by a 38-year-old Italian woman, who managed to escape in time . About thirty firefighters intervened, it took more than three hours to contain the flames and clean up the building.
