The wave of Covid infections that has swept through China may have already peaked in some of the country's biggest cities , including Shanghai and Beijing.

This was confirmed by a study published on December 29 in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers of Medicine, and according to which the latest wave of infections affects the main Chinese cities , while rural areas will be affected by the increase in infections between the middle and the end of January.

The spread could be " dramatically increased " by trips planned during the upcoming Spring Festival , the national holiday period of the Lunar New Year, which falls on Jan. 22.

Meanwhile, Beijing has issued a firm condemnation of the imposition of Covid tests by a dozen countries on travelers from China, warning that it could take "countermeasures" in retaliation.

“Some countries have put in place entry restrictions aimed exclusively at Chinese travellers. This has no scientific basis and some practices are unacceptable,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said, adding that China could “ take countermeasures, based on the principle of reciprocity .”
