At least 12 people were killed in an armed attack inside a bar in Irapuato, Guanajuato state in central Mexico.

Around 19.51 local time, the police said, an armed commando entered the room and opened fire on customers and staff: six men and six women were killed , three people were injured.

The body of a victim was found next to a motorcycle parked in front of the bar, the other bodies were all inside the room.

The hunt for the killers by the Police, Army and National Guard has begun.

The shooting comes 11 days after another bloodbath that left 20 dead in San Miguel Totolapan , a city in the southern state of Guerrero, following friction between criminal organizations active in that area of Mexico.

Guanajuato has become Mexico's most violent state due to rivalries between the Santa Rosa de Lima and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels for their common activities, including drug trafficking and fuel theft. According to authorities, 2,115 murders were committed in the region between January and August.

The municipal government, in reporting on the shooting and the victims, did not specify the identity or motive of the attackers.
