Alarm in Munich , where according to initial reports a man was found killed and a second wounded by gunshots.

The circumstances are still unclear, but local press reports say a "major police operation is underway in the northern part of the city."

As far as we know, the police intervention is on Lerchenauer Strasse which connects the Olympic Park to the university district .

Residents reported gunshots and several explosions. Bomb squad and special forces were also on site.

The man found dead reportedly filled his parents' home with explosives, set it on fire to blow it up, and then took his own life. The Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that a letter from the man was found, threatening attacks at the Oktoberfest. Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) addressed the City Council about the threatening letter he received, explaining that the police had verified that the sender was skilled in handling explosives. "The threat is unfortunately very real ," the mayor said. "We cannot take any risks."

Meanwhile, the authorities have announced that as a precaution, the Oktoberfest will be postponing its opening today : the Theresienwiese, where the festival is held, will remain closed until 5:30 pm today.

The Farnesina clarifies: "No Italian citizens are involved."
