After bringing devastation – and even casualties – to Jamaica, Hurricane Melissa made landfall on the southern coast of eastern Cuba.

Although downgraded to a Category Three, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) declared, the superstorm – one of the most violent of this century – hit the island with maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h.

Melissa, described as "extremely dangerous," reached peak strength in the early hours of yesterday with winds exceeding 300 km/h, causing torrential rain and severe flooding.
