The number of people employed in Italy is growing, but they are all men.

This was revealed by Istat in its new report on work, in which it explains that people with a job increased by 35 thousand units in September and by 390 thousand units in October 2020.

Even at a trend level, the increase mainly concerns men, with 271,000 more employed (+ 118,000 women).

If the current numbers are compared with those of January 2021, the increase exceeds 600 thousand employed and is due exclusively to the resumption of employment (fixed-term contacts).

However, the recovery from pre-pandemic levels (February 2020) is not yet complete: the number of employees is in fact lower by almost 200 thousand units.

The unemployment rate rises, which in October was equal to 9.4% (+ 0.2% on September and -0.6 points compared to the same month last year), despite the fact that among young people it drops to 28.2% (-1.4 points).

This is not a figure to be read in a negative way, but which is linked to the fact that the number of job seekers in the last month increased by 51 thousand units (especially over 24), while the decline in inactive people weighed (-79 thousand on September and -425 thousand on an annual basis).

The decline in self-employed workers also continues: in October there were 4 million 920 thousand units, with a minus 9 thousand units on September and minus 132 thousand units on October 2020.

Eurostat data on youth unemployment in European Union countries also arrived today: in Italy the percentage dropped to 28.2% from 29.6% in September. The Italian rate is the third highest after Greece and Spain, where it is respectively 33.2% and 30.3%.
