Muriel Furrer, the 18-year-old Swiss who fell yesterday – and ended up against a tree – during the junior race of the world cycling championships in Zurich, has died.
The UCI, the world cycling federation, announced it in a statement which reads: "It is with great sadness that we learned the tragic news of the death of the young Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer. With the passing of Muriel, the international cycling community loses a cyclist with a bright future ahead of her. The 18-year-old fell heavily yesterday, Thursday 26 September, during the Junior Women's road race and suffered serious head trauma before being taken to hospital by helicopter in very critical condition. Muriel Furrer sadly passed away today at the University Hospital of Zurich."
"The UCI and the Organizing Committee of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling World Championships - the statement concludes - extend their sincere condolences to the family, friends and the Swiss Cycling Federation of Muriel Furrer. Muriel Furrer's family asks that her privacy be respected at this very painful time."
