The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded by the Swedish Academy to Iranian women's rights activist Narges Mohammadi.

Mohammadi, vice president of the Center for the Defense of Human Rights imprisoned by the Iranian authorities since May 2016, is still detained in the infamous Evin prison.

The award was given to her for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for her efforts in promoting human rights and freedom for all . A courageous battle that «involved enormous personal costs. The Iranian regime arrested her 13 times, sentenced her five times and to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes,” the committee writes.

«A historic moment for the fight for freedom in Iran»: thus the family of Narges Mohammadi. "The Nobel victory highlights the courage of Iranian women", is the UN comment.
