The actions to combat African swine fever do not stop in Sardinia.
And 41 pigs not registered in the zootechnical register and without owners and health checks killed during the search, capture and depopulation of illegal wild pigs ordered yesterday by the Project Unit in the Desulo countryside, 41 pigs were killed not registered in the livestock registry and without owner and health checks. In Desulo, in January 2019, the last illegal wild pig positive for the virus was registered.
Illegal breeding of pigs remains one of the most important risk factors for the persistence of the Psa virus in the territories. As the European inspectors also pointed out in the recent Audit that took place on the island last November, these animals constitute the true transmission belt of the virus between the wild population and domestic animals.
The Region makes it known that the Inspectors of Brussels have recognized that the activities carried out in recent years have drastically reduced the number of these animals and therefore the circulation of the virus, and in any case they reiterated how it is necessary to complete the actions on the territory.
The appeal of the Region and Project Unit is once again addressed to "those few who refuse to comply, especially in areas such as Desulo, where the eradication of the virus could be an extraordinary driving force for the relaunch of the sector, in particular of quality delicatessen ".
