Final with surprise winner at the Ancona athletics absolutes.
Marcel Jacobs, Olympian of the 100m at the Tokyo Games, had to give up the scepter on the 60m - distance on which he is the reigning indoor world champion - beaten by the Tuscan Samuele Ceccarelli: that the sprinter from Massa was on the rise he had made it clear with 6.58 scored in Berlin), but that he could beat Jacobs was certainly not predictable. And instead on the Marche track Jacobs and Ceccarelli sprint side by side, synchronized by blocks: in the launched phase, when the Olympian usually leaves everyone behind, Ceccarelli pulls out the winning cue and closes in 6.54, a time that raises him to third Italian sprinter ever.
The world and European indoor champion closes at one cent, setting the timepiece at 6.55 (after the 6.56 of the battery). Naturally incredulous, confused and happy, the blue bearer of the Athletics Firenze Marathon who, with the test in Ancona, is the third European of the year two weeks from the Euroindoor in Istanbul. To close the national podium Roberto Rigali with 6.69.
The winner
« There are no words to describe this emotion, winning the first Italian title in the final with the Olympic champion is something that cannot be told. To Marcell Jacobs I say thank you. I didn't expect that, really. We knew - says the sprinter referring to coach Marco Del Medico - that the physical shape was good, as demonstrated in the races before the Tricolors. But the idea of competing with and beating a champion of this caliber is like no other. A result that is built with patience and sacrifice, athletics gives no gift to anyone. I'm a simple boy - says the young man born in 2000 who started running at 16 and says he was passionate about student competitions - I live in Massa and study Law in Pisa (he's enrolled in the fifth year, ed). I started relatively late compared to many of my colleagues, I've always been excited by athletics. But never at this level. A show ».
The champion looks ahead
Jacobs congratulates the new Italian 60m champion: « I just have to congratulate Samuele - he says - he did an excellent race, he deserved it. I told him to look to Istanbul: it will be fun, with that weather it's worthy of the final. Obviously it burns because it's the first Italian title I've lost after I don't know how many years, but I'll never stop putting myself on the line. There are still many technical things to fix, in the heat it was a totally different race. I have to review the final, but if there had been a 100m I would have stopped. I was in a racing condition that highlighted a problem somewhere, I'd like to understand where: it didn't allow me to continue racing. We must work. We need to review the various parts and figure out where the problem is. Now in the lead are the indoor European Championships, a stage of transition for the outdoor season ».
