Too many delays on third doses: "Sardinia risks a lot, we need to accelerate"

Reservations for the third dose for over 40s open on the Island on Wednesday at noon, but for the elderly, the data is not comforting.

In the eighty-year-old age group (ten from 80 to 89), that is the best in the ranking according to the latest data in the possession of the Region, 92,620 had presented themselves to the appointment with the first dose (97.3% of the total of residents in this age group), which dropped to 89,748 (equal to 90.3%) when it was time for the second.

Few of those who received the third puncture: only 31,589, is the figure of a few days ago, written in black and white in the report that the regional health councilor turns over in his hands: "So far, only one in three eighty-year-olds has received the third dose of the vaccine ", adds Mario Nieddu himself: it is 33.2%. It is worse if we consider the previous decade, that is from 70 to 79 years: over 161 thousand vaccinated with a single dose (equal to 94.2 %), while over 153 thousand have also received the second (89.6%). But so far only 12,693 seventy-year-olds have gone to the appointment with the third (7.4%).

5.8% of Sardinians between the ages of 60 and 69 received the "call". The centenarians who boast the third dose are 101 (22%), while the 90-99 years "recalled" are 5,342 (just over one in four).

"The Sardinians got distracted - councilor Nieddu bitterly - we are still under the hundred thousand third doses administered on the island, although very close to this first goal which, of course, cannot satisfy us".

Meanwhile, the arrival of the cold season risks acting as a detonator for the explosion of infections and hospital admissions. A concrete danger also in Sardinia where the embankment represented by a high percentage of the vaccinated population (83% of the over 12s) is not enough, especially today that the undecided and skeptics of the third dose. Ranges at risk, of course: over 60, very old, frail.

"We are risking big - Gabriele Mereu, head of prophylaxis in Cagliari and southern Sardinia, spreads his arms - Let's see what is happening in Germany and in the rest of Europe, infections and hospitalizations are also rising in Italy: it takes little because the disaster you arrive in Sardinia. For this you have to move and accelerate with the third doses ".
