In 2023, Sardinia was the Italian region with the highest number of voluntary homicides committed in relation to its population : sixteen confirmed victims . While there were twelve homicides in Liguria , four of which were committed by a partner or ex-partner, four by another acquaintance and four by an author unknown to the victim. Liguria was the second Italian region with the highest number of homicides in relation to its population, behind Sardinia .

This was revealed by Istat in the report on homicide victims in Italy in 2023 , which in total were 334 (+3.7% compared to 2022) of which 117 women and 217 men.

The homicide rate last year in Sardinia was 1.02 per 100,000 inhabitants , followed by Liguria with 0.8, Campania with 0.73, Abruzzo and Calabria both with 0.71, compared to the national average of 0.57. In Liguria last year eight males and four females were killed.

"The geographical distribution of homicides has always been very different between men and women - explains Istat -. Organized crime, which predominantly claims male victims, is historically more present in the South, while violent family contexts , in which female homicides are almost entirely committed, do not have a precise geographical characterization and are distributed throughout the country, where, year after year, peaks of homicides are located in an extemporaneous and fairly random manner".

In 2023, the geography of the territorial concentration of homicides appears extremely different, in the case of men the first three Regions are Sardinia, Calabria and Liguria, in the case of women Abruzzo, Trentino Alto Adige with the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano/Bozen and Umbria.

In the case of female homicides, Sardinia, which has the highest number of male homicide victims , is at the bottom of the list of regions where the phenomenon is present.
