The proposal to award honorary citizenship to singer Alessandro Mahmood comes from the benches of the Orosei municipal council.
For the artist, born in Milan in 1992 and winner of two editions of the Sanremo Festival, an unbroken link with the Baroniese centre, the town of origin of his mother, Anna Frau.
Opposition councilors Giacomo Masala and Annalisa Lai launched the proposal to Mayor Elisa Farris during Friday's city council meeting.
«The artist has repeatedly recalled with immeasurable love Orosei, the town of origin of his mother Anna Frau, during his television and concert performances», said the two minority representatives.
For the singer-songwriter, the bond with Orosei goes beyond the holiday periods, also thanks to the collaboration with the Intrempas Oroseinas female choir and various local groups.
Hence, the further emphasis of Masala and Lai on the important international showcase that Mahmood has granted to the country on several occasions: «Considering that this opportunity creates great benefits, in terms of tourist, cultural and territorial promotion», the two councilors specified, «and that Alessandro Mahmood, does not appear to be one of our fellow citizens but over the years has shown an attachment to our territory, we believe that the granting of citizenship is also a stand taken in his defense, strongly reaffirming his origins as well as giving due credit to the artist».
For the two councilors it was also a dig at the Municipality, which "at various times has granted honorary citizenship to other deserving individuals and some of these have never performed or provided services that would benefit our community."
Thus, the appeal to the majority: «We ask to put our motion to the vote so that the relevant offices can take action for a quick response, even by calling a special city council meeting, with the same single item on the agenda».
Request already accepted by the mayor Farris, who announced the discussion and vote in the next city council.
