Cut and taken away from the breathtaking scenery to which nature had destined them. In Mezzaluna, a town in the southern part of the island of San Pietro, someone cut and removed portions of rock, a disfigurement repeated in about forty places that did not go unnoticed. During a walk on the left ridge, halfway between Mezzaluna and La Conca, a citizen found himself faced with a different scenario than usual, with missing points of pieces of rock and the earth moved, demonstrating that the cutting did not occur so long ago.

The complaint

First the astonishment and then the indignation for the discovery of the disfigurement, the report was sent to the Forestry Corps. In Carloforte in the last few days the personnel of the forestry station of Sant'Antioco, competent for the territory, arrived: in Mezzaluna the agents verified the report and carried out the surveys, photographing the sampling points in the rocks. An investigation has been opened to clarify what happened in the high-value natural area. Who took the trouble to walk to the ridge, cut and take the pieces of rock and then bring everything back to the car? The access points are different. Another element to clarify is when the operation was carried out, was it a single shipment or were the samplings carried out in multiple stages? Naming the person responsible will not be easy, the area is rather isolated, but certainly whoever removed the pieces of rock committed a crime, in addition to having violated several restrictions between those of the Island of San Pietro, which is part of a Sic area (site of community interest) and a ZPS (Special Protection Area). Furthermore, the entire island of San Pietro is protected with landscape restrictions based on Legislative Decree 42 of 2004 and the Regional Landscape Plan. In short, a naturalistic and landscape jewel to be protected and preserved in its uniqueness and fragility, a corner of paradise in the middle of the sea. Whoever defaced the rocks, broke several rules.

The blitz

Recently, although it is not known exactly when and how, someone cut and took away pieces of rock. At Mezzaluna, on the left ridge, the cuts are visible. In the space previously covered by rocks, the earth is now bare: in some places a triangular cut, in others square cuts. Whoever acted had all the time to organize the cutting and removal and transfer the loot to a vehicle parked nearby.

"We were not aware of it, these are undoubtedly acts to be condemned - says the mayor of Carloforte Stefano Rombi - and we appreciate the gesture of the citizen who reported the matter to the Forestry Corps. It is always positive when a citizen takes the naturalistic heritage of our island to heart". In this case the alarm was raised by a citizen, passionate about excursions and walks in the most characteristic corners of the island of San Pietro. A walk in Mezzaluna, an enchanted place with scents of Mediterranean scrub and a view of the blue sea. But with something out of place, on the last walk, a lack that immediately caught the eye: those holes between the rocks, scattered along the ridge. The samples were reported to the Forestry Corps, which has now started an investigation to try to shed light on the cuts to the rocks of Mezzaluna.
