A 31-year-old man, originally from Cava de' Tirreni (Salerno) and already known to the police, was reported by the Sorgono Carabinieri for attempted fraud and impersonation .
According to the military's reconstruction, the investigation began in August after a local citizen reported receiving a suspicious phone call.
The caller identified himself as a "Carabinieri Marshal" and, using spoofing techniques —which make the caller's number appear to be that of a trustworthy entity—asked the victim to deposit €27,000 into an account in the name of a supposed magistrate, promising advantages in a hypothetical legal case in exchange.
Thanks to the investigation, which cross-referenced telephone and bank account data, the Carabinieri were able to identify the scammer and report him at large.
The Carabinieri recall that spoofing is a technique increasingly used by scammers to deceive victims , often vulnerable people, and invites citizens to be wary of suspicious requests and to contact 112 immediately in case of doubts.
