Brotzu is sold out. And it's not good news, so much so that general director Agnese Foddis speaks of a "health emergency".
The dramatic situation of the most important hospital in Sardinia is described in a communication sent this morning to all the general directors of the health companies in Sardinia (including Aou and Areus) and to that of the regional health department.
Foddis informs the recipients of the "serious critical situation that has arisen in the various operational units". In the last few days «we have recorded the exhaustion of available beds in General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics and Traumatology, Hand Surgery and Orthopedic Microsurgery, General and Emergency Surgery, Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Gatsroenterology, Neurology/Stroke ».
This situation, explains the manager, "is putting a strain on our resources and our ability to guarantee adequate assistance to all patients who need it". The letter therefore ends with an appeal: " I ask for your maximum collaboration and commitment", writes Foddis, addressing all those who operate the levers of healthcare control in Sardinia, "to identify immediate and effective solutions to deal with this health emergency and ensure the well-being of patients."
The situation is caused by multiple factors. There are reasons linked to the aging of the population but also, in the contingent, the continuous closures of departments in peripheral hospitals due to a shortage of doctors and the lack of local assistance, which bring all patients to the capital. Where hospitals are collapsing.
