The Sardinian agro-pastoral world demands concrete responses and planning from regional politics. The first official meeting between a delegation of shepherds and the regional councilor for agriculture, Gian Franco Satta, was held in via Pessagno, in Cagliari. On the table are crucial issues such as drought, which is devastating the countryside, and the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), accused of penalizing many companies.
Fabio Pisu , farmer from Armungia and spokesperson for the Shepherds Without Flag committee, underlined the need for immediate and competent interventions to address the complex problems of the countryside, reiterating that the only way to make Sardinia grow is to invest in agro-pastoral activities.
After numerous meetings, demonstrations and strikes, today the shepherds feel back to square one. Mario Mulas , a farmer from Fonni, confirmed the need for preventive and non-emergency planning, hoping that the new administration will listen and collaborate to resolve the problems.
Among emergencies, water shortages are the most worrying. Ivan Garau of Carbonia highlighted the paradox of water scarcity in many areas of Sardinia while in Sulcis it is wasted. He called for urgent interventions to avoid this waste of primary resources. Michele Cuccui , a breeder from Silanus, criticized the new CAP for halving agricultural stocks, calling for an annual correction to prevent companies from closing by 2027.
The pastors, convinced that they can propose valid solutions, ask to be listened to and hope that this new administration can finally address the problems in a structured way and with a long-term approach.
