Dozens of schools and hundreds of classes have been erased from the school network map, and the pieces will continue to fall in a region without children, where in 2024 the number of new births has fallen below the ceiling of 7,000 (6,655), with over five hundred fewer children than the births (7,242) of 2023.
35 thousand students (data from the Ministry of Education) have been lost in the last ten years in Sardinia due to the collapse of the birth rate , and there will be many more in the next decade. According to Istat projections, by 2035 the land of empty cradles will have almost 50 thousand fewer students (46,758).
A projection, in fact, that the National Institute of Statistics evaluates starting from the continuously decreasing trend of the birth rate (in 2023 of 4.6 per thousand inhabitants compared to the national 6.4) and of the fertility rate (0.91 per woman, national average 1.20).
